Essentials of Pranayama Workshop
Pranayama from the Texts:
“The control of the breath causes both physical and mental development.” -Varahaupanishad 5.46-49
“By pranayama the internal impurities are removed. It is the best Yoga practice. Without its help, liberation is not possible.”
-Gandharvatantra ch.10
“There are two causes that make the mind wander around: 1) vasanas -desires that are produced by the latent impressions of feelings and 2) breathing. If one is controlled, the other automatically gets controlled. Of these two, breath should be controlled first.”
-Yogakundalyupanishad 1.1-2
“When breath control is perfected, the body becomes light, countenance becomes cheerful, eyes become bright, digestive power increases, and it brings internal purification and joy.
-Grahayamalatantra, ch. 13
In this workshop we explore seven pranayama practices along with some of their variations. We discuss general guidelines for safety, movement of prana, and potential dangers and the ultimate intentions of practice. Our workshop draws from the wisdom of Dr. Vasant Lad, Dr. David Frawley and the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda.
